Become a Mentor

Remember, you are only as good as the people who work for you, so select your staff carefully and train them by giving them more responsibility. It is essential to build mutual trust if you want quality work from them. Build up their confidence and support and encourage them at all times. Be positive with your comments, and give constructive criticism. Make a special effort to listen to staff complaint, ideas and suggestions. You may be required to counsel and help staff with personal as well as work-related problems. Counseling is an important skill and should be studied and practiced at an early stage in your development as a manager. If you delegate work, praise the person concerned if they respond well and achieves good results. Find something to praise in each person but be specific. Tell them exactly what they did well, and how they could improve even more. Become a mentor and help your staff achieve their goals. Good managers are recognized because their staff produce superior work and have a highs output.

Develop Leadership Qualities

Leadership is a behavioral skill, so it can be learned. Away from your day-to-day work, you can develop leadership skills in supportive organizations such as community service clubs, school committees and sports clubs. If you join such organizations and accept responsibilities and achieve success, you will build your confidence and improve your communication skills. Good speaking, listening, writing, and meeting skills are essential for successful managers. Managers should have a vision for the organization and the enthusiasm to accomplish that vision. To be a successful manager and leader, you must be accepted by your staff and earn their respect. You must become people-oriented, “down-to-earth” in your thinking, and flexible in your management style. You must seek the support of all staff and be able to motivate and excite them. Advocating a grand vision is useless unless the vision can be achieved. Enlightened leadership about understands the needs of the people in your organization, acting on their worthwhile recommendations and allowing others to accept credit for success. Be prepared to lead from the front. Set high standards both at work and in your private life. To be a leader, act and dress like one. The most successful managers work very hard, yet they always seem to have time to talk to their staff. Set yourself personal goals and objectives and work to achieve them. Reflect and objectively evaluate your successes and failures, and be honest with yourself.

Be A Good Manager

Your success as a manager will depend largely on your ability to plan, organize, and inspire your staff. You must be prepared to spend time with your staff and clients, ask those questions and listen to their suggestions. You must be able to get on well with people. You should have good communication skills, to keep your people informed about developments in the organization. You must be able to look at things objectively and make tough decisions, and once you have made them, stick to them. If you are not a strong delegator, you must learn to master this skill. The ability to delegate is one of the most important qualities of successful managers. You must be able to recognize and set up efficient work teams and use the strength and ability of the people in the teams to achieve the goals of the organization. You must also be able to motivate your staff and support and encourage them with coaching and training. At other times, you may need to act as a show your leadership skills.
